I got tired of the same damn questions all the time:

“Cade, you’re one of the greatest quarterbacks ever to play the game. You’ve already set so many records. What are you shooting for next?”

That sort of thing. You know what I told ‘em? What they wanted to hear. Certainly not the truth.

The truth was I just didn’t care anymore. The game had lost meaning for me. Life had lost meaning for me.

I never thought much then about how a woman might play into those feelings. As a superstar quarterback, it wasn’t like I was lacking for beautiful women on my arm.

One woman, Serena, was different. She wasn’t shallow like all my others, and when we spent a wonderful night together, it was like I could start giving a damn again about life.

Then she walked out. Not only did she walk out, she walked out pregnant. Just one little thing. She didn’t tell me at the time, or even years later.

I tried to put her out of my mind, but I still want her. How can I trust a woman who would hide my child from me? How can I trust myself when I desire her so badly?
