It is autumn festival time in Granite Valley, and the day of the big Off-road Fall Crawl.
I look forward to this casual off-road trek every year, and have since I was a kid. It’s the last chance to scale some boulders, splash in the mud, and descend steep slopes before the rain turns to sleet and snow.
But this year there’s a new driver: a woman, smart-mouthed and testing my patience.
There’s never a shortage of women looking to have fun, but this one is different. Challenging.

My brother and his friends have driven in the Fall Crawl for years. I never joined because it was their guy thing. But sitting around the fireplace with the women, playing with babies, and baking muffins, makes me want to vomit.
This year, I have my own vehicle, and am ready to get my adrenaline pumping. I can sass the v8 with the best of them.
But dang, if I don’t get distracted by the guy in the Jeep behind me. He makes my body tingly and nervous.
His presence makes me want things I’ve never wanted before.
Is it just the off-road adrenaline, or is it him?
