Tomas is stumbling through the woods, attempting to reach the lights he can see in the distance. If he does not make it to the village, the wounds from a sword in his gut will be fatal. Only moments before everything goes dark, Tomas is taken in by a woman named Katie, who is the closest thing the village has to a healer. Without realizing it at first, the young woman just saved this hardened warrior’s life.

No one knows who Tomas is or what he was doing there; it appears that his wounds are a result of a fight with bandits who have been terrorizing this place lately. However, Katie begins to trust the mysterious man, and she reveals to him Maisie, her four-year-old daughter. After Maisie’s father was gone, Katie has never seen someone getting as close with her child as this fearsome warrior does! However, her joy will not last long as a threatening letter towards Tomas is left in their house.

Someone wants Tomas out of that place or maybe even dead. Unfortunately, the village is in the middle of nowhere, and Maisie has no horse to spare, so Tomas must be well enough to trek more than ten miles before he can leave. But, while he recovers, he grows unsure of whether he can leave the woman who treated him so well and little Maisie alone in a place that is becoming more and more dangerous.

Tomas knows that he is the only one capable of protecting them, and he is willing to put up one last fight, which will be for someone other than himself for the first time. But this new weakness is seen as an opportunity by his enemies; if they can not defeat him in battle, they will make sure he will suffer in ways he had never imagined before…
